Esthetician to the FLOTUS Shares Six Steps for Beautiful Skin

JoElle Lee, Personal Esthetician to First Lady Michelle Obama, is a national skincare expert, educator, and champion for a holistic approach to producing healthy, younger looking skin. JoElle emphasizes that ‘everyone can have the type of skin they desire, if only they had the right combination of products, lifestyle habits and skincare techniques.’ In anticipation of JoElle’s presentation at D.C. Green Festival we consulted JoElle’s Twitter @JoElleSkinCare to find six lifestyle changes that will help you put your best face forward!

  1. Drink more water

Hydration is key to clear and supple skin! When living a busy lifestyle it can be hard to remember to stay hydrated. Whenever you feel at all thirsty, pause to drink a large glass of water to ensure your body is getting what it needs.

  2. Maintain good nutrition - eat plenty of veggies

A balanced diet will ensure you are eating lots of food that your skin loves like avocados, tomatoes, spinach, and sweet potatoes. Antioxidants and vitamins from whole foods help reduce redness and irritation in the skin, and will reduce wrinkles and fine lines over time.

  3. Maintain good nutrition - limit sugar and salt intake

Salt can increase swelling in the face and make skin feel stressed. Sugar can lead to excess oil production and unwanted breakouts. Limiting your consumption will help keep your skin happy.

  4. Eat the essential oils your skin needs

Just one teaspoon of flaxseed and one teaspoon of olive oil a day will keep your skin plump and refreshed.

  5. Start your day off with a skin nourishing Detox Tonic

JoElle recommends consuming a mixture of warm water, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar and honey in the morning to give your skin some love that will last throughout the day.

  6. Exercise regularly

Regular exercise will increase your confidence and ensure your skin is detoxifying. Make sure you wash off all make up before your work out! Wearing make up while exercising can cause clogged pores and clogged pores lead to unwanted breakouts.
