Congratulations to the winner of the first Green Festival NYC Community Award! Thanks to the public’s online votes and our attendees’ votes the New York Coalition for Healthy School Food will receive a $5,000 grant from Green Festival to expand their efforts to provide more plant-based foods and education to New York City schools and communities. Amie Hamlin, executive director of the NY Coalition for Healthy School Food thanked their supporters and congratulated the other finalists on stage. She was grateful and moved by the recognition and support, and looked forward to putting the funds to good use.

The Community Award finalists were selected by a panel of judges and included: Food Bank For New York City, the City's major hunger-relief organization working to end food poverty throughout the five boroughs; Green City Challenge (GCC), an organization dedicated to educating New Yorkers about ways to live, work and eat green through challenges that demonstrate the knowledge of participants; Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, New York City’s largest emergency food program; the New York for Healthy School Food, which introduces plant-based foods and nutrition education in schools to educate the whole school community about health and the food-environment connection; and The South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation’s (SoBRO), a program that works to enhance quality of life in the South Bronx by strengthening businesses and creating innovative economic and career development programs for youth and adults.

The four runners-up for the Green Festival Community Award will receive a booth at Green Festival NYC 2015, where they can promote their organizations and raise awareness for the sustainability work they are doing in their local communities. Green Festival hopes to grow the Community Award program and invites other companies and businesses to join in supporting local communities to be green.
