Shelly Backlar

Shelly Backlar joined Friends of the Los Angeles River as the Executive Director in 2003. A life-long bird lover, her recent career highlight was canoeing a natural section of the Los Angeles River on the historic “Paddle the LA River” pilot boating program. In August, Shelly was one of four sister-river delegates from Los Angeles who traveled to Munich, Germany to celebrate a decade-long effort to “renaturalize” the Isar River. As a member of the Los Angeles River Plastics Industry Task Force, she collaborated with executives and city staff to ensure that plastic bags and fast-food waste are kept out of the River. Shelly was an Advisory Committee member for the City’s Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan and has served on several other River-related committees. Shelly speaks frequently at conferences, with the media and with watershed stakeholders about FoLAR’s vision and the issues affecting the future of the Los Angeles River. She especially enjoys interacting with young people during River field trips and classroom presentations
