Sierra Club - Chicago Group

sierraclub Since founded by John Muir in 1892 , the Sierra Club has been working to protect communities, wild places, and the planet itself. It is the largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States. Sierra Club is divided into chapters and groups, most chapters representing a state and any number of geographic groups within a state. The Illinois Chapter is divided into 15 groups, totaling 20,000+ members. The Chicago Group is the largest with about 7,000+ members and includes not only Chicago, but also surrounding towns and northerm suburbs. Though a member is assigned to a group based on their residential address, members may partake in events in any group within the Chapter or an other Chapter of the Sierra Club.

CCA Academy

cca Academy2 CCA Academy is a small, private, non-denominational high school located in Chicago’s North Lawndale Community. CCA provides non-traditional students, ages 17-21, who have completed eighth grade with a second chance to earn a high school diploma through a rigorous educational program, extracurricular activities, and supportive services that prepare students with the academic, social and life skills to enroll in higher education, vocational training, or seek gainful employment. CCA is licensed by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to grant the high school diploma, is as a Youth Connection Charter School Campus (YCCS), and is a member of the Alternative Schools Network (ASN).

We support a nonjudgmental community where everyone can feel welcome to express their opinions, socialize, and have fun! Some of the fun activities include the following: exchanging vegan recipes (raw and not raw), vegan food potlucks, dining out at local vegetarian/vegan/raw restaurants, lectures pertaining to the vegetarian/vegan/raw lifestyle, and outreach events that promote a vegan lifestyle.

Unite Here 1 Local

Local 1 UNITE HERE Local 1 represents approximately 15,000 hospitality workers in the Chicago area. Local 1 members are the heart of Chicago’s hospitality industry, working in area hotels, restaurants, school cafeterias, stadiums, event centers like McCormick Place and Navy Pier, Chicago’s major airports, and casinos in Northwest Indiana. We are a union of housekeepers, cooks, bartenders, bellmen, food and beverage servers, and dishwashers. Local 1′s parent union, UNITE HERE, represents approximately 300,000 hotel, food service, and gaming workers throughout the United States and Canada.

Ten Thousand Ripples

ten thousand ripples TTR is a partnership between artist Indira Johnson and Changing Worlds, the lead organization in a consortium of local community, social service, educational and cultural organizations. Guided by a city-wide advisory council, TTR uses an innovative approach that engages entire communities and brings together people from various sectors in pursuit of transformational, sustainable change.TTR is rooted in the beliefs that art is for the people, that community art should contribute to daily life, and that creating safe forums for residents to talk creates a habit of dialogue and a foundation for trust and mutual understanding. When these elements are in place, communities come together and quality of life is raised. TTR aims to leverage public art as a springboard to build responses and solutions to vital social concerns and to improve neighborhoods.

 

Columbia College Chicago Fashion Studies Department

The curriculum offers a pragmatic approach to the many areas of the fashion industries, integrating studies in marketing, fashion merchandising, retailing, and the art of the entrepreneur. Students experience and explore the dynamically creative, real world of fashion design.

 

Greater Chicago Food Depository

chicago food depository The Greater Chicago Food Depository, Chicago’s food bank, is a nonprofit food distribution and training center providing food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community. The Food Depository distributes donated and purchased food through a network of 650 pantries, soup kitchens and shelters to 678,000 adults and children in Cook County every year. Last year, the Food Depository distributed 64 million pounds of nonperishable food and fresh produce, dairy products and meat, the equivalent of 134,800 meals every day.

We believe that through their words, young people can promote tolerance and remove barriers to transform their lives and society.
